How to Submit a Tax Return

If you are younger than 65 years, you need to pay tax if your income is more than R78 150 per annum. Income is defined as any money earned through employment or other means such as renting out a room in your home, working after hours and any interest earned on investments.

You can make your way to your nearest SARS branch with your ID, an original certified copy of your ID and proof of address and banking details. After your registration is complete, you’ll receive confirmation of your tax number online from the consultant. This tax number will be used in all your future interactions with SARS and all future employment. 

  • You can take all your documents to your closest SARS branch for assistance.
  • You can appoint a registered tax practitioner or accountant to do your tax return for you.
  • Ask your employer if they provide staff support for completing tax returns.
  • Your IRP5 / IT3(a) certificate (you can ask your employer for this)
  • Your banking details 
  • Retirement annuity certificates
  • Travel logbook (if you receive a travel allowance or company vehicle allowance)
  • Details of medical expenses that were not covered by your medical aid
  • All documentation relating to income you’ve received or deductions you want to claim

According to SARS, the list of costs that are deductible are as follows; pension fund, retirement pills annuity, provident fund, donations to approved bodies.

Remember that different methods of filing your tax return have different deadlines, so be sure to check the SARS website to make sure you know when your return is due each tax season. Pay on time to avoid penalties and interest on late payment.
